Searching for Files
If you need to search for a particular type of file, it's easy using Windows' built in Search features.
So if you remember, we're looking for music files, and nowadays that means we're looking for mp3's. More to the point, we're looking for files on our computer with file names that end with ".mp3". That ending is called an "extension" and usually denotes which kind of file is which.
To conduct the search :
- Click the Start Button and then select "Search". (It should have a picture of a magnifying glass beside it).
- A window will pop up named "Search Results". On the left side of this window, you'll see a question that reads, "What do you want to search for?" You should choose "All files and folders". You may be inclined to search by Pictures, music, or video but for now, do not select that choice.
- Next it will ask you for "All or part of the file name:". Type in "*.mp3". That symbol infront of the period can be
typed by holding the "Shift" key on the keyboard and pressing the "8" key.
Typing in "*.mp3" tells the search to return all files that are named with an ".mp3" extension regardless of what the name preceding the ".mp3" is. Meaning, "santa.mp3" and "robin.mp3" will be returned because they both end in ".mp3".
- Finally, make sure the "Look in:" dropdown box has the drive selected you wish to search in.
- Click Search.
