Computer Organization
If you've had your computer for a while, you have surely had the chance to play around with it. You have undoubtedly sent e-mail, surfed the web, and over the course of doing everything else, created lots of files. But where are they now? No, not the child stars from the 80's, but all your glorious files! Nothing can be more frustrating than knowing you have something in your possession but just can't find it. Fortunately, there are measures that can be taken to get your computer organized!
Files and Folders
It's probably prudent to start the organization train with files and folders, since they're really at the heart of the matter. Not only that, but they really go hand in hand with each other...For what better place to put a file, than in a folder! But before we go off creating a zillion of them, think about some kind of folder structure you wish to have on your computer. For instance, maybe you want to place all of your digital pictures into a folder named "Photos" and maybe you want to put all of your mp3's into a folder named, "Music"...This is how you do it!Since XP, it has been more than easy to create folders on the fly! Almost every situation where you're looking into a folder, you can right click in that window and select New -> Folder. A bit too much? Let's create a Music folder on your hard drive in 4 easy steps.
- Go into My Computer by clicking the Start Button and then selecting "My Computer".
- Now go into your main hard drive. Your main hard drive is usually named "Local Disk (C:)". You can double click
it's icon or click it once and push the "Enter" key on your keyboard.
- Once into your hard drive, simply right click anywhere in the window on white space (not a file or folder) and
select New -> Folder.
- You can now immediately type a name for the folder so type the word "Music".
(If you could not immediately type the name of the folder, it was simply named "New Folder". But you can rename the folder by clicking on it once, waiting a second, clicking it again, and then preceding to give the folder a name. You can also right click the folder and choose "Rename" from the popup menu. Then, just enter a name)
